Lists with This Book. Khemri was a bit obnoxious gatrh unlikable at the beginning, which I’m sure was the point. Remember when David Eddings wrote a big long thing about how to construct a fantasy world and story? Aug 27, Lydia rated it it was amazing.

He chooses the test, and is given 4 months of training in 4 different artificial environments- princds in a body that doesn’t possess his augmented features. There has to be a catch… Khemri learns the minute he becomes a Prince that princes need to be hard to kill—for they are always in danger. It’s only mentioned a couple of times, and the cover obscures this fact, but I’m pretty certain of it.

I enjoyed the worldbuilding, as usual; there’s a real sense of expansiveness here, the vastness of space and the weight of age. I like sci-fi don’t get me wrong but there was way more technical stuff then I can handle. He’s written some of young adult speculative fiction’s greatest classics.

Jan 03, rachel rated it it was ok Shelves: The romance was indeed a little rushed, and so isn’t well-suited for big romance readers. I found that I couldn’t get to grips with WHY Khem was willing to make such significant changes to his world view, in the name of true love – the relationship was not given much time to develop and having spent a fair length of time in Khem’s company by the time the subplot emerged, I just didn’t believe he would behave in quite the way he did.

The romantic subplot was predictable, and I figured out immediately the necessary elements were introduced how Khem would end and what he’d do. I never had a clear depiction in my head of what literally anything looked like and it was too hard to keep track of the different -tek types, let alone all of the different spaceships and weapons.


Priests are either assigned to Princes or to temples; at temples, new priests of that particular aspect are trained. But firstly, can I sing the praises of the title?

Khemri is one of the Princes. He’d spent seventeen years living and thinking a certain way, and there is no development of the new mindset he acquired in a mere two years. Not many new releases have those bona fides. This one is no exception.

Am I the only person who was seriously disturbed at the idea of mind-programmed humans serving the Princes? This, I cannot accept. The conclusion is on many levels a triumph of selfishness. But the best barometer of its appeal to me remains the fact that my year-old brother called to discuss how much he enjoyed it.

However, I found this same emotionless voice in his Abhorsen series, making me think he’s just not very good at writing emotion rather than it being an intentional attempt at making Khemri seem more robotic.
